March 21 and 22, 2020

 

The sound of musket volleys and the smell of gunpowder will greet visitors to Fort Cooper State Park as it celebrates Fort Cooper Days on March 21 and 22. Experience Florida’s history during the 1836 skirmishes of the Second Seminole War on the shores of Lake Holathlikaha. Watch as volunteers re-enact an attack between a group of Seminoles and members of the First Georgia Battalion of Volunteers. Re-enactments occur at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.

Held on the shore of Lake Holithlakaha, the Bluegrass Music Festival is just one of several great events held at Fort Cooper State Park. In its 9th year, the festival is jam packed with some of the best local Bluegrass Bands.

Shop and visit interesting artisans’ and crafters booths.

December 13, 14 & 15, 2019

Experience the magic of the holiday season during the annual Nights of Lights at Fort Cooper State Park. Stroll along the walkways and in through the buildings taking in the sights and sounds of this wonderful time of year.  For the young ones and young at heart come visit Santa and Mrs. Claus who will be here all three nights to listen to your Christmas wishes.  Be sure to treat yourself to your choice of refreshments of coffee, hot cocoa, hot apple cider, cookies or for those with a serious sweet tooth can make a s'more. Admission is a non perishable food item or new toy for Citrus United Basket or pet food for Citrus County Animal Shelter. Hours are 6pm to 8:30pm. For more information call (352) 726-0315

The Friends of Fort Cooper, in partnership with the Citrus County Audubon Society will sponsor monthly birding walks. The bird walks will be held the second Thursday of each month until about May.  They are open to beginners and experienced birders. Participants will meet at 8:30 a.m. by the lake. Naturalist Diana (Dee) Bolton will lead the walks. Dee, with her multitude of birding knowledge will guide participants in spotting and identifying birds.  Participants should bring binoculars, a field guide and anything else they feel will make their birding experience more enjoyable.  It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for weather conditions and bring something to drink to stay hydrated.

Due to popular demand, the Friends of Fort Cooper will feature a special program “Bat Houses: Where the Bats Are” and observation of Florida’s bats at Fort Cooper State Park, 3100 S. Old Floral City Road in Inverness. Fort Cooper has a huge bat house that now has thousands of inhabitants. Seating in the Rec. Hall is limited.  Must RSVP one week prior to event by emailing  Eileen Riccio at naturecoastbirder5@yahoo.com. There is a $3 per car  entrance fee.

Due to popular demand, the Friends of Fort Cooper will again hold bat house building workshops. Bat House Building Workshops are scheduled for Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. and Saturday, April 4, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Cooper State Park. Reservations can be made with Ms. Bisett-Clark or by calling  321-890-6154.  The cost is $50.00 for the bat house kit.  It is recommended that participants bring a cordless drill.  $3.00 per vehicle park entrance fee required.

 

We are excited to announce an addition to the bird watching program at Fort Cooper State Park.

Beginning October 10, 2019 until April 30, 2020, every Thursday morning (excluding Thanksgiving) their will be a bird walk.  Beginning and experienced bird watchers are welcome and will meet in parking lot #2 at 8:30 am.  It is recommended that participants wear closed-toed shoes and suggested they bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, field guide and camera if you wish.  The event may be cancelled due to inclement weather.  $3.00 per vehicle entrance fee is required

National Take a Hike Day

November 17, 2019

Come celebrate National Take a Hike Day by hiking the Seminole Heritage Trail.  Walks will be at 1:00 PM and again at 3:00 PM and will begin at Kiosk #1 of the Seminole Heritage Trail.  Stick around for Campfire Tales at 4:30 PM which will be held in the picnic area.  It is recommended to wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions, close-toed shoes and to bring water and insect repellent.  Park entrance fee is $3.00 per vehicle.  For more information call (352) 726-0315.
